When I was in high school, I got into sports competitively. The increased stress on my body caused me to suffer a few injuries. The most notable was a bilateral pars fracture of my L2 vertebrae.

The injury left me with 2 options – spinal graft surgery, which likely would have ended my athletic career, or physical rehabilitation. Due to my serious interest in my athletic career I chose the latter.

I was in a back brace for 6 weeks and underwent rehab for 12 weeks. At the end of my journey I was able to compete again, although I was timid in the beginning. Because of my choice I was able to continue participating in athletics and earned myself a scholarship to the University of Memphis in Track and Field.

While at the U of M, I competed in the shot put and hammer throw. During my freshman year, I again, had an injury. I had a bilateral fracture to my L3 vertebrae. I embraced my knowledge that I had gained from my first and self-treated along with the help of my athletic trainer. I was again able to avoid surgery and was able to complete my athletic career.

My experience with physical medicine led me to pursue a career in it, and I chose chiropractic.
